Technology in Practice: Anshen + Allen Architects Mills-Peninsula Medical Center

Anshen + AllenPresenter(s):
Tony Rinella, CIO, Anshen + Allen
Mark Tiscornia, Architect Designer, Anshen + Allen
Thomas M. Simmons, President, ARCHVISTA Building Technologies

The San Francisco office of Anshen + Allen, an international architecture firm and a leader in healthcare design, was tasked with building one of the most seismically safe and family-friendly hospitals in the country. The firm used ArchiCAD and other advanced technologies to design a hospital that can withstand an earthquake up to the magnitude of at least 8.0.

Learn how Anshen + Allen Architects used ArchiCAD to push the limits of design, discover how:

  • Advanced technology was used to provide the highest level of earthquake safety, coupled with countless energy-saving and earth-friendly features
  • ArchiCAD was paired with NavisWorks™ to run clash detection tests and reduce conflicts prior to construction
  • BIM helped achieve significant time and cost savings

Integrating Design & Construction: Case Study Featuring Kirksey and the Award-Winning Westway Park Office Building Project

Presenters Include: Kirksey Architecture

In June, Kirksey was awarded the 2006 Building Information Model Award for "Inspirational Pilot Project" by the AIA Technology in Architectural Practice (TAP) Knowledge Community. The Firm's winning submission, the Satterfield & Pontikes Westway Office Building in Houston, was designed and modeled using Graphisoft's Virtual Building™ solutions, including ArchiCAD®, Constructor and Estimator.

Project Background Because Kirksey is already committed to a model-based design approach with ArchiCAD, Satterfield & Pontikes initiated the integration between the two firms so they could work together to establish a BIM-based, replicable manufacturing process across the various stages of project programming, design and construction. By structuring the project around a design-build team consisting of the owner, general contractor, architect, structural engineer, MEP and selected subcontractors, ArchiCAD's 3D modeling tools were used to better coordinate, communicate, document and construct the three-story office building.

  • Learn how the use of Virtual Building (BIM) technology solutions is giving Kirksey a winning competitive advantage
  • See how a model-based approach to the Westway project helped improve visualization, coordination, analysis, documentation and more.
  • Learn tips for successful implementation of Virtual Building technology solutions.
  • Participate in a live Q&A session with the Kirksey team at the conclusion of the webcast presentation.

Thomas A. Heinz, AIA - Case Study: Massaro House - based on an original Frank Lloyd Wright design, ArchiCAD helps bring the project to life for the first time!

Presenters Include: Thomas A. Heinz, AIA, and Kurt Ameringer, Graphisoft.

Activity Description:In testament to the versatility and power of ArchiCAD®, a home based on an original Frank Lloyd Wright design, 50 years after its initial inception, is now under construction after being fully modeled and documented in ArchiCAD (on the Macintosh® platform) by Thomas A. Heinz, AIA.

Where most of Wright's later, Usonian residences are structured to follow a rectangular/square grid, this home was based on an equilateral triangle, with walls at either 60 or 120-degree angles. The building's site also played a strong role in the layout of the plans. A 60-foot rock, known in the project as the Whale Rock, forms a wall in the entrance of the building and also supports part of the roof. ArchiCAD allowed Heinz the flexibility to work with these challenges, following through on the design as Wright originally intended.

  • Learn the history behind the home
  • Discover the unique challenges of this project
  • Easily create quality presentations that communicate design intent, improving client relations
  • See how the Virtual Building™ model accurately reflects and documents the building for construction, helping make the building a reality

Oppenheim Architecture + Design - Case Study

Presenters Include: Chad Oppenheim, OAD & Carlos Ramos, OAD

Description: On June 7, 2005, Graphisoft and Oppenheim Architecture + Design, an internationally recognized firm, presented a live webcast to over 350 building industry professionals. The project presented was Ten Museum Park, a 50-story luxury high-rise in oceanfront Miami, which is currently under construction. This 600,000-square-foot structure will contain two hundred high-end condominiums, four hundred parking spaces, 20,000 square feet of Clinique La Prairie Spa Fitness Center, a 25,000-square-foot sky garden, twenty swimming pools, and an upscale restaurant and outdoor cafe.

By viewing the recording of this webcast, you'll learn how Virtual Building modeling technology has already helped:

  • Solve the unique design challenges presented by the small 105' x 210' lot size for the project
  • Improve coordination and collaboration amongst team members
  • Meet aggressive deadlines, keeping the project ahead of schedule
