Andrew Ā is Co-Founder and Head of Research & Development at Square One, and is an internationally known architectural researcher and software author. Andrew's main passion is writing software; he is the principal author of all the architectural science and design tools available at Square One, including ECOTECT. Andrew is also creative director of the Natural Frequency journal and, until recently, was a Research Fellow at Cardiff University - but is now working full-time on research and development at Square One.
Description
The challenges involved in the design of high performance buildings offer architects the chance to fully engage with some of the more interesting developments in building analysis and simulation. Rather than cede control to an army of specialist engineers, many of the methods and techniques involved can actually be used by the designers themselves. This is very important as it then becomes possible to tightly integrate analysis and simulation within the early design process, providing architects with invaluable insight early enough to guide and shape design decisions at all levels.
This presentation and discussion will cover how ECOTECT supports:
- Shadows & Reflections
- Shading Design
- Solar Analysis
- Lighting Design
- Right-to-Light
- Acoustic Analysis
- Thermal Analysis
- Ventilation & Air Flow

Viktor Bullain is the Director of Construction Services for Virtual Construction technology solutions. His responsibilities include formulating strategies and management of field operations for the global Virtual Construction Services team. He holds a Masterā??s Degree in Architecture and has 10 years of experience in using and implementing Virtual Building (BIM) technologies. Ā He has worked on many of the worldā??s largest and most prestigious projects with AEC companies using 3D, 4D and 5D technologies in the US and around the world. He is currently implementing a construction services process based on the six sigma concept to provide a scalable framework for continuous process improvement and rapid growth of the Virtual Construction Solution Suite of products and services.
Description
Virtual Construction technology solutions includes three elements: design (3D), scheduling (4D), and cost (5D). These solutions offer software tools and services to help to help Owners, Construction Managers, General Contractors and Subcontractors implement and use the 5D process and technology.
In this session, we will discuss various use cases of the Virtual Buildingā?¢ model including constructability analysis, communication with subcontractors, cost planning, project planning and control. Ā Building teams will learn how to eliminate coordination errors before construction starts, how to provide more value during preconstruction services, and youā??ll see how to manage change more efficiently while creating more accurate estimates and more predictable schedules.
We will show you how to:
- Integrate design information with estimating to increase accuracy and reduce time
- Share budget and schedule information to improve decision making.
- Empower Contractors to predict problems and avoid delays and quality problems.
Managing the Full Life Cycle Cost of Building Ownership
Kimon Onuma, ONUMA
- May 3:Ā 12:45pmā??1:15pm
- May 4:Ā 3:00pmā??3:30pm
- May 5:Ā 12:45pmā??1:15pm
Presenter:
Kimon Onuma has a unique perspective that spans architecture, planning, programming software development. He is one of the leading architects / technologists using Building Information Modeling (BIM). Onuma was one of the first firms to use Virtual Building (BIM) technology on large scale US government facilities in 1994, when he began using ArchiCAD. Mr. Onuma was the visionary that drove the creation of the Onuma Planning System (OPS), a web enabled tool that allows users to work in BIM and GIS with simple interfaces.
Session Description:
Sustainable design and lean construction offer a huge opportunity for architects and users of Virtual Building (BIM) technologies. Sustainable design is not limited to the actual construction material, it also applies to the process of designing. Traditional processes of designing and managing facilities are inefficient. If even a small percentage of time can be saved from the process itself of defining and designing buildings there could be a huge impact on the industry.
Case studies will be presented of how the U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) has used the Onuma Planning System and Archicad for many projects including the Sector Command Center (SCC) schematic design development and developing the USCGā??s Shore Facilities Capitals Asset Management (SFCAM) Road Map. Enterprise wide projects for the USCG demonstrate how these solutions support the need for a strategy to manage and maintain shore facilities and infrastructure linked to mission execution. The enterprise implementation resulted in improved building life cycle management and allocation of infrastructure resources.

Description
We have been on the road to BIM for the past 4 years, and we believe not only does our future survival depend on our success in BIM but it has given us a great opportunity to get ahead of our competition in ways never dreamed of. I will share some of our success and failures that have strengthened our pursuit and some of our strategies that are not only internal but are shared with others firms on the road to succeeding in BIM. It is also important to always be looking ahead at new opportunities and challenges that will continue to improve our ability to design, build and manage facilities with less cost, shorter schedules and higher quality. Not only is Lean Construction and Building Green a part of that future, but it represents a growing opportunity to make our industry stronger then it has ever been.
